QUESTIONS FOR THIS WEEK
(READ BEFORE YOU ARRIVE)

Go around and quickly tell everyone about your job. Now, pick someone else's job you would like to try for a day and share why.

As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?  If you didn’t fulfill that dream, share about the moment when you realized that you wouldn’t achieve that goal.

What are a few of the gaps (big or small) that you see between where you wanted to be in your career and where you are?

What is the best career advice you have ever received? Did you apply it? If so, how did it help? If not, why not?

Read Luke 16:10. We said that this is the greatest career advice that you will ever receive. That’s a pretty bold statement based on everything the group just shared. So, do you agree or disagree? Explain, why or why not?

What do you ultimately have control over in your working life? What distracts you from staying focused on those things?

We said God cares more about your character than your career. The more difficult the work situation, the faster and deeper your character grows. How have you seen this in your career (or otherwise)?

How do you think God may be using your current work situation to grow your character?

“Be faithful in the small things, because God is paying attention.” What is at least one way you can apply this principle this week? What will be the most difficult thing about applying this principle this week?

QUESTIONS FOR THIS WEEK
(READ BEFORE YOU ARRIVE)

What song best describes your mood when it is quitting time at the end of the week? What is your weekend jam?

What was your first job? What one memory (good or bad) sticks out to you about that first job?

What is one thing you love about your current job? What is one thing that frustrates you?

What / who do you think has shaped your view of work the most?

What does the following statement from Sunday mean: I will never find purpose in my work until I understand the purpose of my work?

Brian mentioned four main reasons we go to work: to pay the bills, to find our identities, to be successful, and to find purpose/significance. Which of these most closely captures your primary reason for going to work? Why?

Why do those four reasons we go to work fall short of being the purpose for the working life?

Read Colossians 3:23. What do you think it means to work “as working for the Lord”? Share about a time when you felt like you were doing this.

How does Colossians 3:23 change our perspective on work?

What makes it difficult to truly work for God? What are some of the distractions and circumstances that keep us from honoring God with our work?

What is one thing you can do this week at work to more fully work for God?

—————————————————

Far from being a punishment or a curse, work is actually a blessing, first given to us by God in the garden of Eden. And because work is a blessing, there is no such thing as a job without purpose. The purpose of the working life is to show God working in my life.

QUESTIONS FOR THIS WEEK
(READ BEFORE YOU ARRIVE)

Take out your phone, and share the story behind one of your favorite pictures. Bonus points if it is a funny picture!

After finishing the Freeway series, doing the homework from last week’s group, and maybe diving into the Freeway workbook, what did you learn about yourself?  What are some changes you have made?

What do you think the biggest obstacle will be to keeping your new found freedom?

On Sunday, we said that freedom is maximized as we share it with others. In other words, you were rescued to be a rescuer. What pushback or reservations do you have in letting God use your beautifully broken story?

Read John 4:1-42.  Make a list of all the key moments in these verses.  What do we learn about Jesus, ourselves, and God’s plan for the rest of our life in this story?

What are some things you could do to intentionally place yourself in environments where God could use your story?

What are the people in your life “thirsty” for?  How are they trying to quench their thirst with earthly water?  What can you do to help them find “living water?”

Do you believe God can use your ENTIRE story to help someone else find freedom?  What part of your story is the hardest to share?

Who do you know that your greatest failure or pain might help, share their name ___________.  Will you do it?

HOMEWORK

  • Memorize Galatians 5:1.
  • Take some time this week and go back through your entire Freeway workbook (or message notes). Circle or highlight the things that are key to your freedom. Make an index card with these keys to remind yourself moving forward.

Group Questions (WEEK 5) - Oct 13 & Oct 15

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE

TUESDAY NIGHT
7:00PM @ Church Lobby
(13266 Byrd Dr Odessa, FL 33556)

THURSDAY NIGHT
7:00PM @ the Taylor’s in Concord Station
(18019 Glastonbury Ln. LOL, FL 34638)

QUESTIONS FOR THIS WEEK
(READ BEFORE YOU ARRIVE)

Have you ever been given a nickname or pet name from someone? Explain it? Do you like it or hate it?

After the first five parts of this series, doing the homework from last week’s group, and maybe diving into the Freeway workbook, what are you learning about yourself?  What are some changes you want to make?

Read Genesis 29:14b - 28.  Many people would make this out to be a great love story, but in reality it is the story of a man driven by fear, insecurity and a sense of false identity.  How have those things led you to compromise in your life?

Do you think you are a people pleaser? If so, how has that carried over into your faith or view of God?

Do you struggle with self-acceptance?  If so, how has that carried over into your faith or view of God?

Do you think accepting yourself is a prerequisite to being able to receive love from God and others? Explain.

What is the difference between pleasing God and trusting God as our primary goal? How do you struggle back and forth between those two?

Why do so many people choose the path of pleasing God over the path of trusting God? What can we do to keep on the trusting path more?

How might you see yourself, and God, differently if you lived from a place of acceptance, instead of living for acceptance?

HOMEWORK

  • Memorize Psalm 18:19.
  • God likes to hand out new names. Simon to Peter. Saul to Paul. Jacob to Israel. In Revelation 2, God talks about a white stone with a new name on it. It’s a name just for you. What is your best guess at God’s special nickname for you? Use a Sharpie and write this name on a rock and put it somewhere you will see it!
  • This week watch your thoughts. When they become negative or destructive, consider where those thoughts are coming from. Replace them with thoughts of love and acceptance from your Heavenly Father who loves you because you are His!

Nothing screams fall more than football! What is your favorite team and why? What football memories do you have from your childhood?

After the first four parts of this series, doing the homework from last week’s group, and maybe diving into the Freeway workbook, what are you learning about yourself?  What are some changes you want to make?

Read John 8:1-11. Who do you identify with more in this story, the crowd who has been sinned against and was having a difficult time forgiving, or the woman caught in the sin who needed grace and mercy?  Explain.

Define forgiveness.  What does it mean to receive forgive-ness from God, others and yourself?

How is forgiveness different from excusing what people have done or just avoiding what people have done?

Have you ever thought about how you could get someone back? Why does it feel so good to do that?

What are some things in your life you need to surrender to God? How does not letting go or not forgiving actually hurt you in the meantime? Explain.

Why is it difficult to forgive ourselves?

Which is more difficult for you: receiving forgiveness from God, from others, or from yourself?

What’s one thing you need to do (if you have not already) because of this message / study?

HOMEWORK

  • Memorize Luke 6:37.
  • When you pray this week, turn your hands up to heaven. Let this be a simple form of surrender
  • Write a letter of forgiveness, get it all out, then burn it as a symbolic way to “dropping the rock.”

  • What do you tend to complain and whine about?
  • What do you think the root of that complaining might be?
  • Read Genesis 3:8-13.  How does complaining & blaming others get in the way of us owning our problem, circumstance, or situation? Explain.
  • Read John 5:1-9.  Jesus asked this man if he wanted to be healed / free, as you have wrestled with that same question this week, how would you respond tonight?
  • What would you have to give up to be healed / free?
  • What do you need to take responsibility for tonight, even if it wasn’t your fault?
  • What did we say on Sunday was the only way to find the courage needed to do that?

QUESTIONS FOR THIS WEEK
(READ BEFORE YOU ARRIVE)

  • What are some things that scare you that you are OK sharing with the rest of the group?
  • Read Psalm 139:1-4 & 23.  What do we learn about God in these verses?  What do we learn about ourselves?
  • Searching ourselves can be scary!  But, after the first two parts of this series, doing the homework from last week’s group, and maybe diving into the Freeway workbook, what did you learn about yourself?  What are some things you want to change?
  • These changes will require wisdom, courage and faith. We first need wisdom to face our past. “Your past is not your past if it is still impacting your present.” How have you seen that in your life?
  • What is the wise thing to do in order to not transfer this pain from your past, into your future?
  • We also need courage to deal with our present. Answer the question from Sunday honestly: Do you really want to change? Or do you just want the appearance you’re trying to change?
  • What would truly desiring change require of you?
  • Finally, we need faith to believe that healing is possible. What are some lies you have believed that have kept you from healing?
  • How has God demonstrated that He is bigger than your history and more concerned with your destiny?  Now, read Romans 8:31-39
  • What are some things we can do this week to avoid reaching for our medicators / idols once we begin to “open our eyes?”

HOMEWORK

  • Memorize 1 John 4:18.
  • This week, when you feel negative emotions creeping in, try to identify what happening around you. See if you can identify some triggers. Write them down.

We said, “We need to get under the things that God has put over us, so we can get over those things that God has put under us. Explain that as best you can.

How does getting under God’s “umbrella” of authority provide protection? How have you seen this in your own life?

Have you ever been to a memorial service and thought the person they are burying was a different person than you knew?  Why is that?

Some of us don’t live in the past, we live in imagination, things will be great when ________ happens. Why do we do that? What is the danger in doing this?

Ice Breaker: What is something you are currently looking forward to?

Read (or from memory quote) our theme verse: Hebrews 6:9 (NLT) We are all looking forward to better things. On Sunday, we talked about two things that impact us when we are anticipating something. What were they? (Hint: They both start with “P”)

When the p_____ gets difficult, how does focusing on the p_____ _____ help?

Read Hebrews 10:34-35 (NLT).  Contrast how you typically respond to suffering, or when things are taken away from you, and how these first century Christ-Followers responded in this                 passage.

What encouragement does the writer of Hebrews give us in verses 34 & 35?

What are some things you “hang” your hope on? Why do we tend to hang onto those things instead of hanging onto our highest hope?

Read Hebrews 6:18-20 (NLT). What is this “hope we have as an anchor?”  How does this hope help us daily along the p_____?

Read Hebrews 10:36 (NLT).  To receive the better things you were made for, you have to endure the season patiently. How do we develop patient endurance?

If we can trust God with our salvation, then we can trust God with our situation.  What situation do you need to trust God with?

What is one thing we talked about that can help you?

How has God taken care of this problem?

Read Hebrews 4:14-16 (NLT)  What do these verses tell us about Jesus? What does the author of Hebrews encourage us to do in this passage?

We said we should be confident in Christ’s finished work, in other words we shouldn’t confuse our work with our worth. What does that mean? How have you seen yourself fall into this trap on your faith journey?

If you fully embraced your worth to God, how would that impact your work for God?

Read Hebrews 10:18-22 (NLT) Between this passage, and from what your group knows of ancient Judaism, how does Jesus provide a better path to God?

According to verse 19, what privilege do we now have because of Jesus? What could you do to take greater advantage of this amazing privilege?

Read Hebrews 10:23-25 (NLT) What are some ways we can “spur” and “encourage” each other as a group of Christ-Followers?

Read (or from memory quote) our theme verse: Hebrews 6:9 (NLT)  What is the author trying to convey to his readers by using the word “better?”

What benefits are their for the believer who lives with God expectations?  Give an example of a time when you lived with God expectations.

What are some of the enemies of living with God expectations? How do we fight those?

Another way we experience the better we were meant for is loving God by loving others. Read Hebrews 6:10-11 (NLT). What connections do you see in these verses, especially in verse 11?

Part of God’s better way to live, is to live with faith and endurance. What illustration did we use for living by faith?

Describe a time you thought you were making progress, making things “better,” but in reality you weren’t? Where did you go wrong?

What are some of the things people typically think will make their lives better?

Read Hebrews 6:9 (NLT). What does this verse tells us about the better things in life?

If you are a Christ-Follower, how have you seen the truth of this verse, and how have you doubted this verse?

Read Hebrews 1:1-4 (NLT). What do these verses teach us when we doubt that the better things come from salvation?

The promise of Easter is soul help, not self-help. The question is: Am I willing to surrender my life, and give up on me ever being able to fix me? Where are you currently struggling with surrender?

If better comes through Spiritual empowerment, not self-empowerment, then how do we live with Spiritual empowerment?

What do these first four verses of Hebrews teach us about Jesus, our worth to God, and how there is nothing better?

QUESTIONS FOR THIS WEEK
(READ BEFORE YOU ARRIVE)

Ice Breaker: What were you doing in 2006? Where did you live? What was going on in your life? Were you working, or in school? Single or married?

What are some of your earliest memories of our church? What stood out that made us unique or different?

Read Acts 15:1-19. Describe in your own words the tension that was going on in these verses. What was this really about?

What similar tensions do you see in the churches  today?

How does / should “not making it difficult for those turning to God”  impact the way we do church?

How have you, or someone you have brought, been impacted by this?

On Sunday, we talked about 5 things we all need to do to continue this impact at our church. We phrased these in the form a question. Why are questions better than answers?

The first question was: What’s my next step? Growth is never accidental, it is intentional. What are you intentionally doing right now to take your next step? How might our church suffer if you don’t?

The second question: Who am I bringing? Who are you bringing on Easter? What creative ways have you found to not just invite, but bring people?

If someone saved your life, would you tell people? What is holding you back from bringing someone to meet your Savior? What will you do about it?

Question three: Does my giving honor God? Are you a tither or a tipper? What could you begin doing this week to honor God with your finances?

Question four: How can I help? Read John 2:1-11. How have you seen the miracle because you serve? What is holding you back from stepping up and serving?

Finally: When should I be there for our guests? What difference does your punctuality and attendance  really make? How can you help encourage others to come early and consistently?

QUESTIONS FOR THIS WEEK
(READ BEFORE YOU ARRIVE)

Ice Breaker: If you could be in the TV series or movie of your choice, what would you choose and what character would you play?

Share about a time when you experienced a gap between what you expected and what you experienced?

Have you ever felt like God was the one that created the gap? If so, share what happened, how did God let you down?

Read John 11:1-5.  What relational details are we given and how does this set up our expectation level?

Who are the people you expect the most from? What two categories do most of those people fall into? Did Jesus fit both of those categories for Mary, Martha and Lazarus?

Read John 11:6-17.  If you are Mary and Martha, what do you do when the God who has the last word doesn’t speak the word you want to hear?

Following Jesus can be a disappointing experience at times. What are some other examples from the Bible where Jesus created an expectation gap?

Reread John 11:4.  When we feel disappointment with Jesus, what two things should we always look for?  How have / how would those things help you?

Read John 11:18-24.  The miracle happens in your life when you stop looking for a way to get out of a situation, and start looking to Jesus for a way to get you through this situation. What does that mean? Share an example.

Read John 11:25-27.  Where was Martha’s faith and how is that a helpful lesson for us today?
Jesus had to disappoint Mary and Martha’s expectations so that He could exceed Mary and Martha’s expectations. How have you seen this in your own life, and what did you learn through it?

How can we encourage someone going through a gap in their life right now?

QUESTIONS FOR THIS WEEK
(READ BEFORE YOU ARRIVE)

We said the problem with bad habits is that they are automatic. What bad things do you find yourself automatically doing?

How did this bad habit begin? When did it begin?

The first part of understanding a habit is that there is always a cue. What do you think the cue might be for your bad habit loop to begin?

The second part of a habit is the actual action, known as the routine. What is your bad routine?

Finally, there is the reward, the pay off. What reward do you get from your bad habit?

We looked at the extreme bad habit Saul was in, read Acts 8:1-3, and Acts 9:1-2.  What was Saul’s cue? What was his routine? What was his reward?

Saul is confronted by Jesus and radically changed, in fact his name is changed to Paul, and he became the greatest evangelist for the Gospel in the history of the world. Read Acts 17:1-4. What do we now learn about Paul’s habit loop?

How is this helpful for our bad habits, what is the principle?

How have you seen the truth of this play out in your life?

Read what Paul goes on to write in Romans 13:14. This is another principle for tweaking a bad habit, avoid the cue in the first place. How could you practically do this in your life?

Read 1 Corinthians 15:33. How have you seen this play out with your bad habits? What should you do?

At the center of every habit loop is a craving. We said that ultimately all problems come down to worship problems. What does that mean?

How could worship change a bad habit into a good habit?

QUESTIONS FOR THIS WEEK
(READ BEFORE YOU ARRIVE)

Read Romans 12:1-2.  If up to 40% of our life happens by habit, what does that mean for us as we consider these verses?

What is one of your good habits?  Did this habit pay off immediately, or was the reward evident slowly over time?  What does this tell us about becoming the person we were created to be?

Read Daniel 6:1-10.  What is going on here? Retell the story in your own words.

What clues do these verses give us about Daniel’s private life that led to his public victory?

Read 1 John 3:7.  What does Daniel’s story, and what John tells us here, teach us about our habits?

On Sunday we said, “Not all habits are created equal.” What does that mean, and how have you seen this in your own life for good and bad?

Read Daniel 1:8.  What does controlling your habit life do for your sense of peace in the rest of your life?

What is one thing you can do this week based on  tonight’s study?
